Information for researchers

As experts in survey science, CHRR at The Ohio State University established the American Population Panel to assist researchers by providing a group of volunteer respondents ready to participate in research surveys.

We are a multidisciplinary research organization with over 55 years of survey experience designing and administering traditional cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys. Some researchers may already know us from our work on the National Longitudinal Surveys for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Panel recruitment

We use a wide array of techniques to recruit participants including traditional address-based sampling methods, email enlistment, landline and cellphone recruitment, in-person recruitment, as well as non-traditional marketing campaigns run in print, digital media, and on multiple social media platforms.

We collect basic demographic information from respondents when they join the panel, and continue to build a more comprehensive profile with information collected from each successive survey they complete. This allows researchers to create focused subsamples and more easily access their target population.

Panel benefits

Compared to traditional sampling methods, the American Population Panel offers researchers a cost-effective way to access respondents, while utilizing CHRR's expertise and services. Many academic research projects are done on a very tight budget and our main purpose is to help you get your projects up and running more inexpensively than if you had to recruit people yourself. For those interested in longitudinal surveys, utilizing the APP offers the added benefit of being able to go back to the same respondents to ask follow-up questions.

Another perk of working with the APP is that we:

  • program and test your survey instrument,
  • produce a fully documented data set in Excel, SPSS, SAS, STATA, & R, and
  • handle contacting and paying respondents.

Additional services include:

  • help with questionnaire authoring,
  • data analysis,
  • sample weight production,
  • design and marketing, and
  • IRB submission.

We work on a wide variety of research topics and look forward to talking with you about your next project!
